〜てからというもの

Marks a turning point after which a lasting change in state or habit has continued up to the present. It is more emotional and emphatic than plain 〜てから, so it is used for events the speaker feels were significant, not for trivial time references. The following clause describes an ongoing situation, not a single action.

• 日本に来てからというもの、毎日が新しい発見の連続だ。

  にほんにきてからというもの、まいにちがあたらしいはっけんのれんぞくだ。

  Ever since I came to Japan, every day has been full of new discoveries.

• 父は退職してからというもの、庭いじりに夢中だ。

  ちちはたいしょくしてからというもの、にわいじりにむちゅうだ。

  Ever since he retired, my father has been absorbed in gardening.

• あの事故があってからというもの、彼は車に乗ろうとしない。

  あのじこがあってからというもの、かれはくるまにのろうとしない。

  Ever since that accident, he refuses to get in a car.
