〜にして

Attached to a noun of time, age, or level, にして marks that point as remarkable: either "only someone/something of that level could do it" (この人にして初めて) or "even at that advanced point" (60歳にして). It also appears with short time spans to stress suddenness, as in 一夜にして. It is a stiff, written-style expression common in essays, speeches and news, and should not be confused with the causative-like 〜にしては ("considering that…, contrary to expectation").

• 彼は五十歳にして絵を習い始めた。

  かれは ごじゅっさいにして えを ならいはじめた。

  He began learning painting at the age of fifty.

• その町は一夜にして水に沈んだ。

  そのまちは いちやにして みずに しずんだ。

  The town was submerged overnight.

• 長年の努力があったからこそ、今回にして初めて成功したのだろう。

  ながねんの どりょくが あったからこそ、こんかいにして はじめて せいこうしたのだろう。

  It was surely thanks to years of effort that success came only this time.
