〜といい〜といい

Picks out two representative aspects of one thing or two members of one group as grounds for the speaker's overall evaluation, which follows in the second clause. The evaluation is emotional — admiration, complaint or surprise — and the pattern cannot be used for neutral facts or for actions the speaker performs. Unlike 〜といわず〜といわず ('all over, without distinction'), 〜といい〜といい presents two chosen examples that lead to one judgment.

• 色といい形といい、このかばんは私の好みだ。

  いろといいかたちといい、このかばんはわたしのこのみだ。

  The color, the shape — this bag is just my taste.

• 味といい値段といい、あの店は申し分ない。

  あじといいねだんといい、あのみせはもうしぶんない。

  In terms of both taste and price, that restaurant is beyond reproach.

• 父といい兄といい、うちの男はどうしてこう頑固なのだろう。

  ちちといいあにといい、うちのおとこはどうしてこうがんこなのだろう。
