〜んがため（に）

A literary, classical-style equivalent of 〜ために expressing a strong, deliberate purpose. It appears in written Japanese, speeches, news and slogans, and sounds stiff or dramatic in casual conversation. Note the irregular form せんがため for する, and that the subject of both clauses must be the same and the action volitional; 〜んがための + N is also possible.

• 生きんがために、彼は必死で働いた。

  いきんがために、かれはひっしではたらいた。

  He worked desperately in order to survive.

• 真実を明らかにせんがため、記者は取材を続けた。

  しんじつをあきらかにせんがため、きしゃはしゅざいをつづけた。

  In order to bring the truth to light, the reporter kept investigating.

• それは自らの利益を守らんがための発言にすぎない。

  それはみずからのりえきをまもらんがためのはつげんにすぎない。

  That is nothing but a remark made to protect his own interests.
