〜をいいことに

Indicates that someone exploits a favourable circumstance to do something the speaker considers improper. It always carries criticism or blame, so it cannot be used for one's own justified use of an opportunity in a neutral way. Compare 〜を機に / 〜に乗じて: 〜に乗じて also means 'taking advantage of' but is more neutral-formal, while 〜をいいことに clearly condemns the actor.

• 親がいないのをいいことに、子どもたちは大騒ぎした。

  おやがいないのをいいことに、こどもたちはおおさわぎした。

  Taking advantage of their parents' absence, the children made a huge racket.

• 彼は私の優しさをいいことに、金を借り続けている。

  かれはわたしのやさしさをいいことに、かねをかりつづけている。

  He keeps borrowing money, taking advantage of my kindness.

• 店員が見ていないのをいいことに、商品を持ち去る客もいる。

  てんいんがみていないのをいいことに、しょうひんをもちさるきゃくもいる。

  Some customers walk off with goods, exploiting the fact that no clerk is watching.
