〜を禁じえない

A formal written expression meaning the speaker cannot hold back a spontaneous emotion. It combines only with emotion nouns such as 同情, 怒り, 涙, 驚き, 失望, 疑問. It is used for the speaker's own feelings (or, in commentary, for a general reaction), not for ordering others, and appears in newspapers, essays and formal speeches rather than casual talk.

• 被害者の話を聞いて、同情を禁じ得なかった。

  ひがいしゃのはなしをきいて、どうじょうをきんじえなかった。

  Hearing the victim's story, I couldn't help feeling sympathy.

• この理不尽な判決には怒りを禁じ得ない。

  このりふじんなはんけつにはいかりをきんじえない。

  I cannot suppress my anger at this unreasonable verdict.

• 事故の現場を目にした人々は、涙を禁じ得なかったという。

  じこのげんばをめにしたひとびとは、なみだをきんじえなかったという。

  Those who saw the accident site are said to have been unable to hold back their tears.
