〜であろうと／〜であろうが

A formal, literary equivalent of 〜であっても／〜でも, stating that the following result holds regardless of the noun mentioned. It often appears with question words (誰・どんな・いかなる) or in the paired form 〜であろうと〜であろうと. Common in speeches, editorials and written argument; in casual conversation 〜でも is far more natural.

• 相手が誰であろうと、私は意見を変えない。

  あいてがだれであろうと、わたしはいけんをかえない。

  No matter who I'm dealing with, I won't change my opinion.

• 雨であろうが雪であろうが、試合は予定通り行われる。

  あめであろうがゆきであろうが、しあいはよていどおりおこなわれる。

  Be it rain or snow, the match will be held as scheduled.

• いかなる理由であろうと、暴力は許されるものではない。

  いかなるりゆうであろうと、ぼうりょくはゆるされるものではない。

  Whatever the reason may be, violence can never be justified.
