〜でなくてなんだろう

A rhetorical question used to assert emphatically that something truly deserves to be called X. The noun is typically emotional or evaluative (愛・奇跡・差別・運命), never a plain concrete object. Strongly literary — found in essays, novels and commentary, rarely in conversation; 〜でなくてなんであろう(か) is an even more formal variant.

• これが愛でなくてなんだろう。

  これがあいでなくてなんだろう。

  If this isn't love, what is it?

• あの状況で全員が助かったのは、奇跡でなくてなんだろうか。

  あのじょうきょうでぜんいんがたすかったのは、きせきでなくてなんだろうか。

  Everyone surviving in that situation — if that's not a miracle, what is?

• 国籍だけを理由に入居を断るとは、差別でなくてなんであろうか。

  こくせきだけをりゆうににゅうきょをことわるとは、さべつでなくてなんであろうか。

  To refuse someone housing solely because of their nationality — if that is not discrimination, what is?
