〜とは

Expresses the speaker's strong surprise, shock, admiration or indignation at an unexpected fact. The sentence often ends there, with the rest (思わなかった・驚いた) left unsaid, or it may be followed by 〜とは思わなかった／〜とは驚いた. Note that this is different from the defining 〜とは (＝'the term X means...'); the emotive use is rather literary and emphatic, close in meaning to 〜なんて but more formal.

• 彼がそんなうそをつくとは思わなかった。

  かれがそんなうそをつくとはおもわなかった。

  I never imagined he would tell such a lie.

• この年で富士山に登れるとは、我ながら驚きだ。

  このとしでふじさんにのぼれるとは、われながらおどろきだ。

  To be able to climb Mt. Fuji at my age — even I'm amazed.

• まさか二十年ぶりにここで再会するとは。

  まさかにじゅうねんぶりにここでさいかいするとは。

  To think we'd meet again here after twenty years...
