〜うが〜まいが

Used to say that the result stays the same no matter which of the two possibilities happens. The same verb is repeated, first in the volitional form, then in the negative conjectural まい form (III类: するまい／すまい, 来るまい／来まい). It is a stiff, written or emphatic spoken expression; 〜うと〜まいと is an equally common variant, and the plainer everyday equivalent is 〜ても〜なくても. The second half of the sentence usually states the speaker's judgement, decision or indifference, so it does not combine with requests about a single fact.

• 雨が降ろうが降るまいが、試合は行われる。

  あめがふろうがふるまいが、しあいはおこなわれる。

  Whether it rains or not, the match will be played.

• 人が信じようが信じまいが、私は見たことを話すだけだ。

  ひとがしんじようがしんじまいが、わたしはみたことをはなすだけだ。

  Whether people believe it or not, I'm just telling what I saw.

• 本人が納得しようがしまいが、規則は規則だから従ってもらう。

  ほんにんがなっとくしようがしまいが、きそくはきそくだからしたがってもらう。

  Whether he accepts it or not, rules are rules and he'll have to follow them.
