〜なんぞ

An old-fashioned, colloquial equivalent of など／なんか used to pick out an example while adding a clear attitude—contempt for others, modesty about oneself, or light surprise. It often appears in the speech of older men and in novels, so it sounds dated or rough in modern conversation. Like など, it is frequently followed by a negative or dismissive predicate (〜なんぞ要らない, 〜なんぞ知らない).

• 金なんぞ要らない。

  かねなんぞいらない。

  I don't need money or anything like that.

• わしの意見なんぞ、誰も聞いちゃくれん。

  わしのいけんなんぞ、だれもきいちゃくれん。

  Nobody listens to an old man's opinion like mine.

• あんな男に頭を下げることなんぞ、二度とあるものか。

  あんなおとこにあたまをさげることなんぞ、にどとあるものか。

  I'll never bow my head to a man like that again.
