〜や〜（など）

や lists two or three representative examples and implies there are others; など at the end makes this "and so on" nuance explicit. Use it when you do not want to name everything, in contrast to と, which lists items exhaustively. や connects only nouns, and does not come after the final noun.

• かばんの中に本やノートがあります。

  かばんのなかにほんやノートがあります。

  There are books, notebooks and so on in my bag.

• スーパーで野菜や果物などを買いました。

  スーパーでやさいやくだものなどをかいました。

  I bought vegetables, fruit and other things at the supermarket.

• 休みの日は music を聞いたり、公園や海へ行ったりします。

  やすみのひはおんがくをきいたり、こうえんやうみへいったりします。

  On days off I listen to music and go to places like the park or the sea.
