〜ない（動詞の否定形）

The ない-form is the casual (plain) negative of verbs, matching ～ません in polite speech. Group 1 verbs change the final -u to -a plus ない (買う→買わない, note the わ), group 2 verbs drop る, and する/来る are irregular. The ない-form is also the base for many patterns such as ～ないでください and ～なければならない, so learning it accurately is essential; ある is exceptional and becomes ない, not あらない.

• 今日は肉を食べない。

  きょうはにくをたべない。

  I'm not eating meat today.

• お金がないから、タクシーに乗らない。

  おかねがないから、たくしーにのらない。

  I don't have money, so I won't take a taxi.

• あしたは学校へ行かない。日曜日だから。

  あしたはがっこうへいかない。にちようびだから。

  I'm not going to school tomorrow — it's Sunday.
