〜前に

Shows that the main action happens before another action or event. The verb directly before 前に is always in the dictionary form, never past, even when the sentence itself is in the past tense. With a noun you must insert の (食事の前に), and with a time span you use it bare (三日前に = three days ago).

• 寝る前に歯を磨きます。

  ねるまえにはをみがきます。

  I brush my teeth before going to bed.

• 食事の前に手を洗ってください。

  しょくじのまえにてをあらってください。

  Please wash your hands before the meal.

• 日本へ来る前に、少し日本語を勉強しました。

  にほんへくるまえに、すこしにほんごをべんきょうしました。

  I studied a little Japanese before coming to Japan.
