〜てくださいませんか

A polite request, softer and more deferential than 〜てください because the negative question form leaves room for the listener to refuse. Use it with people above you or strangers, especially when the request is a bit of a burden. 〜てくれませんか is the plainer, more casual equivalent; 〜ていただけませんか is even more polite. Adding すみませんが at the start makes it sound natural.

• すみませんが、ちょっと待ってくださいませんか。

  すみませんが、ちょっとまってくださいませんか。

  Excuse me, could you wait a moment?

• 先生、もう一度説明してくださいませんか。

  せんせい、もういちどせつめいしてくださいませんか。

  Sensei, could you explain it one more time?

• 写真を撮りたいので、このボタンを押してくださいませんか。

  しゃしんをとりたいので、このぼたんをおしてくださいませんか。

  I'd like to take a photo, so could you press this button for me?
