この／その／あの／どの

These are demonstrative adjectives and must always be followed by a noun: この本, その人, あの店, どの電車. The distance rule is the same as これ・それ・あれ・どれ. A frequent beginner error is saying これ本 instead of この本, or この instead of これ when no noun follows.

• この本はおもしろいです。

  このほんはおもしろいです。

  This book is interesting.

• あの人は田中さんのお兄さんです。

  あのひとはたなかさんのおにいさんです。

  That person over there is Tanaka's older brother.

• どの電車に乗りますか。

  どのでんしゃにのりますか。

  Which train are you going to take?
