〜ことになる

Shows a decision or arrangement reached by a group, organisation or circumstances, not by the speaker alone. Japanese speakers often use it even for their own choices to sound modest and avoid seeming self-assertive. 〜ことになっている describes a standing rule or schedule.

• 来月、大阪に転勤することになりました。

  らいげつ、おおさかに てんきんする ことに なりました。

  It's been decided that I'll transfer to Osaka next month.

• 会議は金曜日に行うことになった。

  かいぎは きんようびに おこなう ことに なった。

  It was decided that the meeting will be held on Friday.

• この教室では日本語だけを使うことになっています。

  この きょうしつでは にほんごだけを つかう ことに なって います。

  In this classroom we're supposed to use only Japanese.
