〜ば（条件）

States a general or hypothetical condition: if A happens, B follows. It focuses on the condition itself, so it is often used for advice, general truths and 〜ば〜ほど patterns. When the main clause expresses the speaker's will, request or invitation, 〜ば with an action verb is avoided; use 〜たら instead (e.g. 東京に行ったら、連絡してください).

• ボタンを押せば、ドアが開きます。

  ボタンをおせば、ドアがあきます。

  If you press the button, the door opens.

• 安ければ買いますが、高ければやめます。

  やすければかいますが、たかければやめます。

  I'll buy it if it's cheap, but not if it's expensive.

• もう少し早く出れば、電車に間に合ったのに。

  もうすこしはやくでれば、でんしゃにまにあったのに。

  If I had left a little earlier, I would have caught the train.
